SUMMARY:training course: Reservoir sediment management for sustainable hydropower in Africa
DESCRIPTION:A hands-on training program addressing one of the most critical challenges facing African hydropower facilities: Reservoir Sedimentation. \nAfrican hydropower facilities are losing significant storage capacity annually to sedimentation - a silent but relentless challenge that directly impacts generation capacity\, increases maintenance costs\, and shortens infrastructure lifespan.\nIs sediment build-up threatening your reservoir's capacity? You're not alone. \nJoin the ICH for their practical\, hands-on field-based training where you'll:\n- Get your hands dirty with real sediment measurement techniques in the field\n- Work with analysis approaches suitable for limited data contexts\n- Explore cost-effective strategies applicable to African conditions\n- Understand climate change impacts on sedimentation patterns\n- Connect with colleagues facing similar challenges \n  \nApplication deadline: 26 May 2025 \nMore information here.

SUMMARY:Africa Energy Forum
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in its 27 years\, the Africa Energy Forum (aef) is being hosted in Cape Town\, South Africa under the enchanting shadow of Table Mountain and in the heart of one of the most active energy development centres in Africa. \nUnder the theme 'Africa United'\, aef will also provide a strong platform to bring African stakeholders together with a united voice and declare what Africa wants and needs to the world. This will be the perfect opportunity to amplify the message from aef to the G20 meetings hosted by South Africa this year. \naef 2025 will see the return of the aef Africa Cup Football Tournament. Delegates will be invited to a once in a lifetime opportunity to play a match at the DHL stadium. \nLooking into the future\, aef is building its legacy with YES! (Youth Energy Summit).  To electrify the continent of 1.5 billion people\, home to the world's fastest-growing youth population\, it is essential to include Africa’s young people in the conversation. With 4\,000 youth attending\, the support of South Africa's IPP Office and the home-grown success story - Pele Green\, YES! will be the biggest and most impactful gathering of youth in the energy sector worldwide!

SUMMARY:Webinar: hydropower's role as a provider of flexibility and storage
DESCRIPTION:Join the ESMAP Hydropower Webinar Series\, launched in March 2025\, to explore the latest trends\, opportunities\, and challenges in hydropower development. \nAs the transition towards sustainable energy accelerates\, hydropower is increasingly recognized as a key energy source that enhances power system flexibility\, reliability\, and resilience. With the growing share of variable renewable energy sources like wind and solar\, the need for dispatchable energy to balance power systems has never been greater. \nIn this second webinar\, we will explore hydropower's role as a provider of flexibility and storage\, from sub-seconds to inter-annual periods\, in integrating wind and solar energy. High shares of variable renewable energy (VRE) can lead to instability and unreliability in power systems. Effectively managing surplus and deficit electricity from VRE sources is crucial for minimizing impacts on the power system\, improving energy security\, and preventing blackouts and increased economic costs. \nDon’t miss this insightful discussion and be part of the conversation on shaping the future of hydropower in the energy transition. \n \nThe event will open with welcoming remarks from Bente Brunes\, Senior Energy Specialist at ESMAP\, World Bank\, followed by presentations from Abhishek Somani\, Senior Economist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)\, and Rebecca Ellis\, Senior Energy Policy Manager at the International Hydropower Association (IHA).

SUMMARY:Training course - Small Hydropower Developments - From Planning to Design
DESCRIPTION:The aim of the course on Small Hydropower Development is to provide theoretical understanding and practical insights into the planning and design of small hydropower plants. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe course is designed for scientists\, engineers and water managers involved in small hydropower development and water resources management\, or interested in these topics. \nLearning objectives\n\nEvaluate the impact of small hydropower plants on the environment and society.\nAddress the various stages of a small hydropower project cycle\, from site location\, to design\, to cost analysis.\nAnalyse and create the preliminary design of a small hydropower scheme.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCourse content\n\n\n\nThe aim of the course on 'Small Hydropower Development - From planning to design' is to provide theoretical understanding and practical insights into the planning and designing of small hydropower plants. \nAfter a short introduction to renewable energy\, energy needs\, hydropower and small hydropower the planning of the plant with site selection and hydropower potential is performed. For the site selection\, lectures and exercises on GIS methods and geology input together with energy demand and hydropower potential are given. \nHydrology is an important parameter for successful hydropower potential estimation and successful project development. Therefore\, applied hydrology with flow duration curves\, statistical hydrology and new data sources for data-scarce areas is introduced. Hydropower potential definition along the river course is defined by available head difference and discharge in the analysed river stretch. Definition of the hydropower potential and selection of the possible hydropower schemes are the first steps in hydropower development. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSmall hydropower design deals with all scopes of the plant's structural and hydraulic design. All parts of civil structures (dams\, weirs\, intakes\, power waterways\, powerhouses)\, but also mechanical parts (turbine\, hydraulic steel structures) and electrical components (generators\, transformers\, grid connection\, smart grids) are part of the course. \nA successful project must be incorporated into the existing environment detecting and minimizing possible negative influences\, consequently\, the environmental and social impacts of small hydropower are addressed and discussed. For a successful project\, adequate financial analysis and presentation of the results in a bank-friendly form are indispensable. The basis of financial analyses and permitting processes are part of this course. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe course is finalized with the presentation of the developed and constructed case studies from different parts of the world. The case studies show different solutions and specific types of problems detected during the development of the small hydropower project. Illustration of the learned topics and also the practical application is shown during the half-day site visit to two hydropower plants in the Netherlands. \nSuch an integral course gives a full overview of small hydropower planning and design processes\, and represents a unique and attractive course for participants from the developing and developed world.

SUMMARY:Training course Reservoir Sediment Management for Sustainable Hydropower in Africa
DESCRIPTION:Sedimentation is a pressing issue that threatens the sustainability of Africa’s reservoirs\, impacting hydropower generation and degrading water quality. This poses serious challenges to water resource management and ecological health. Climate change and poor land practices exacerbate the problem\, leading to economic and social repercussions such as higher operational costs\, reduced energy efficiency\, and water scarcity for communities.\nEffective strategies are key to mitigating these impacts.\nAddressing sedimentation requires a multifaceted approach\, involving technical\, environmental\, and policy measures. By integrating sediment management into the broader context of water resource planning and development\, African countries can enhance the resilience and efficiency of their reservoirs\, ensuring water and energy security for future generations. \nThis ICH training will build on preceding efforts to mitigate sedimentation problems by exploring and sharing practical methods and strategies for economically\, technically\, and environmentally feasible sediment management.\nParticipants will benefit from shared experiences and best practices from other projects. \nThe training will take place in Malawi.
