A roundtable on what is potentially one of the most important energy projects in Africa opened in Johannesburg on Thursday. Some 120 officials from African governments and regional institutions, the private sector, power companies, non-governmental organisations and the media took part in the opening of the Roundtable on the hydropower potential of the Inga in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The DRC Ambassador in Pretoria, Bene M’Poko, chaired the opening session. Speaking on the occasion, OIVP Mandla Gantsho reassured participants that the Bank “will seek to mobilize public and private capital and use its own resources to fund the pre-feasibility study of the Inga.” He emphasized, like other speakers, the potential impact of the Inga (see following report) on regional integration in Africa. VP Gantsho is heading a delegation that includes Director Gilbert Mbesherubusa, the Coordinator of the African Infrastructure Consortium, MZFO ResRep Alex Rugamba, and NEPAD Specialist, Ini Urua.
