Angola`s northern Malanje province`s Kapanda hydroelectric dam will next year add another 260 megawatts to its current 180, with the installation of two more turbines.
The information was released over the weekend in Malanje by the director general of the "Gabinete de Aproveitamento do medio Kwanza" (GAMEK), Emanuela Vieira Lopes. The official was speaking on the occasion of GAMEK`s 24th anniversary, on Sunday, adding that the installation of the first of the two turbines will be completed in April 2007, and the second later in July the same year. She on the occasion spoke out for the industrialisation of Angola, towards a full utilisation of the country`s power potential as a contribute to its socio-economic development. The Kapanda hydroelectric complex is being run by GAMEK, set up by Angolan Government on October 21, 1982, with the purpose of implementing a farming project in the Malanje district of Cacuso. When complete, the project will have an installed capacity of 520 megawatts to supply with electricity the northern system, connecting it with the country`s central and southern systems. The first turbine of the Kapanda dam was tested in December 2003, currently supplying power to the capital city, Luanda, generating 80 megawatts of electricity, with the second supplying the city of Malanje. The works of construction of the Kapanda dam started in 1987 under the Russian and Brazilian firms "Tecnopromoexport" and "Odebrecht", respectively, and recorded several interruptions due to the armed conflict that ravaged the country for decades Additional information: News date: 24/10/2006 |
