WRC/UP project on conduit hydropower awarded Community Renewable Energy Award

As part of the Mail&Guardian Greening the Future Awards, the conduit hydropower project of the Water Research Commission received the Community Renewable Energy Award.
In 2014, as it enters its 2nd decade, Greening the Future embraces technological innovations and forward-thinking green technologies that help combat climate change, encourage renewable energy and foster the strategic management of natural resources.

In the category Community Renewable Energy, an award was bestowed on the WRC conduit hydropower project.

Mr. Marco van Dijk of the University of Pretoria receives the award

The project was implemented by the University of Pretoria in partnership with the Tshwane Municipality, BloemWater and the eThekwini Municipality.

It uses excess energy in pressurised conduits to produce clean and renewable hydroelectric power. This solution is known as conduit hydropower and uses mirco-turbines installed within conduit systems.
