Contractor selection opens for Kikot-Mbébé in Cameroon

The Kikot-Mbébé Hydro Power Company (KHPC), a partnership between France’s EDF and the Government of Cameroon, begins selecting contractors for the construction of the 500MW Kikot-Mbébé hydroelectric dam on the Sanaga River. The deadline for submissions is 31 March.

The initial candidate selection process for the construction works of the Kikot-Mbebe hydroelectric development was launched on January 27, 2025. Qualified companies in the field were invited to express their interest in each of the 3 lots concerned, namely :

  • Lot 1 Civil Works, for civil engineering works and hydromechanical equipment of the dam, the power plant, as well as for metal structures;
  • Lot 2 Electromechanical, mainly comprising the works and electromechanical equipment for the hydroelectric power plant, as well as the secondary civil engineering works of the plant;
  • Lot 3 Line and Substation, consisting of the installation works of the energy evacuation line, the energy evacuation substation, as well as the plant/substation connections.

Companies selected at the end of this Initial Selection phase will be invited to participate in the Call for Tenders phase, the launch of which is scheduled for the second half of 2025.

Kikot-Mbebe Hydro Power Company (KHPC) is responsible for ensuring the design, development, construction, and operation of the Kikot-Mbebe hydroelectric development on the Sanaga River, with an installed capacity of 500 MW. The company was established by the promoters of this ambitious project, the State of Cameroon, and the EDF Group, which are its equal Project Leaders.

The Kikot-Mbebe hydroelectric development aims to construct structures on the Sanaga River intended for the production of electrical energy, in compliance with environmental and social requirements. These production structures mainly include:

  • A retention dam 35 m high and 1200 m long;
  • An electricity production plant equipped with 6 turbines;
  • A very high voltage 400 kilovolt (kV) transmission line, 40 km long, connecting the plant to the RIS connection point in Boumnyebel.
