Construction started at hybrid hydro-PV plant at Balanga Dam, Nigeria

On the 1st August, all project partners officially launched the construction of a 620kW hybrid power plant at the Balanga Dam in Gombe State, North-East Nigeria, the first under a groundbreaking renewable energy initiative that will see six small hydropower (SHP) plants installed across the country.

With support from the European Union, and in collaboration with UNIDO Nigeria Projects, the Government of Gombe State, the Global Environment Facility, Rural Electrification Agency of Nigeria, NASENI, SMEDAN, and the Federal Ministries of Water Resources and Power, this project marks a major milestone in our journey to expand clean, reliable energy access for under-served communities.

The hybrid system will consist of:
A 320kW Small Hydropower (SHP) plant
A 300kW Solar PV installation
- Combined, they’ll generate 620kW of clean energy to serve local agro-based MSMEs and households.

When completed in February 2026, this project will not only light up homes, it will power dreams, livelihoods, and local economies.
