The Federal Republic of Nigeria has officially launched the Small Hydropower (SHP) Center of Excellence Project, marking a significant milestone in advancing renewable energy deployment and sustainable industrial development in the country.
The project is implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), in cooperation with the International Center on Small Hydro Power (ICSHP), and supported by the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund. It aims to strengthen national capacities for the development and application of small hydropower and other renewable energy solutions.
Hosted at Abuja University, the Center of Excellence will serve as a national and regional hub to promote technical training, knowledge transfer and policy support. It will further facilitate the development of integrated energy systems, combining small hydropower with solar and wind energy, to enhance energy access and resilience in Nigeria and across West Africa.
The project inception workshop convened nearly 200 representatives from government institutions, academia, the private sector and development partners. Participants highlighted the importance of coordinated action to unlock Nigeria’s estimated small hydropower potential and to support inclusive and sustainable industrialization.
A Project Steering Committee has been established to guide project implementation and ensure alignment with national priorities. The Committee brings together key stakeholders, including relevant ministries, UNIDO, ICSHP and academic institutions, and has endorsed the project workplan.
We are proud to support the Government of Nigeria. Through capacity-building, technology transfer and institutional strengthening, the Small Hydropower Center of Excellence will contribute to expanding clean energy access, fostering local industry development, and supporting Nigeria’s transition towards a low-carbon and resilient energy system.
