Serengeti Energy’s Boston Hydro progressing towards 2025 COD

The construction of the 5MW Boston Hydro project is progressing well and according to schedule, and remains on track for completion by Q3 2025.  This is the fourth hydropower plant being constructed by our team in South Africa and showcases the effectiveness of the Serengeti Energy in-house  development and construction approach. Notably the project also secured financing from Investec (a South African bank) in December 2024, further confirming the commercial robustness of the business case.

Current Status of the Project:

The project has taken advantage of a 6-month shutdown of the Lesotho Highland Water Scheme (LHWS) water, which allowed the in-river works  to be constructed in the dry, before the return of flows in the river by April 2025. The innovative mass concrete/ precast element weir is now at ogee (crest) level, with work on the tailrace concluding following the installation of the 8-ton maintenance gate.

Key infrastructure components have also been successfully installed, including the intake radial gate, emergency gate, and active spillway gates, allowing us to move forward with stage one installation of the hydro-turbine. The 45-ton turbine will be lowered into position using a 400-ton crane, aligned, and cast in place, securing its operation for the 60+ year lifetime of the project.

Completion of construction:

The next phase of the project will focus on the installation of the generator, transformers, and control equipment in preparation for wet commissioning. Coordination under the in-house engineering, procurement, construction and management (EPCM) contracting structure will peak in the coming months, as we manage the interface between multiple contractors, suppliers, and consultants,  to ensure a seamless integration of all components and work processes into the final operating power plant.

A strong track record in hydropower:

Boston Hydro is the third-generation hydropower plant developed and constructed by Serengeti Energy and will be our flagship hydropower project. With a long standing track record of operating hydro facilities, we have incorporated lessons learned into the design, procurement and development and construction phases. This approach enhances plant availability, reduces maintenance requirements, and minimizes risks to long-term performance.
