In a significant step towards expanding access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy, the UNIDO, in partnership with the Plateau State Government and with co-financing support from the European Union, is advancing the development of a 2.4MW Small Hydropower (SHP) Project at Assop Falls, Plateau State in Nigeria.
The approximately USD 6 million project is designed to strengthen renewable energy access, support productive uses of energy for agriculture and MSMEs, enhance livelihoods, promote food security, and create decent work opportunities across the state.
During the formal presentation of the project’s feasibility study report in Jos, UNIDO Representative and Director for the Regional Office in Nigeria and ECOWAS, Philbert Johnson, reaffirmed UNIDO’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s renewable energy transition and unlocking the potential of sustainable energy solutions for rural and peri-urban communities.
The project aligns with UNIDO’s Programme for Country Partnership (PCP), particularly under its Renewable Energy and Environment Management component, as well as Sustainable Development Goal 9, promoting resilient infrastructure, inclusive and sustainable industrialisation, and innovation.
His Excellency, Caleb Mutfwang, Executive Governor of Plateau State, welcomed the partnership and reiterated the State Government’s commitment to positioning the state as a hub for renewable energy, industrial growth, and sustainable economic development. The Governor also disclosed that the state has already committed over ₦1.5 billion towards the project, underscoring strong local ownership and commitment to implementation.
Once operational, the 2.4MW hydropower project is expected to contribute significantly to reducing power deficits, stimulating industrial activity, supporting agricultural value chains, expanding employment opportunities, and driving inclusive economic growth in Plateau State.
